Glass Flake Lining for the Dyes and Dye Intermediates Industry

Glass Flake Lining for the Dyes and Dye Intermediates Industry

India is one of the world’s leading producers of dyes, pigments and dye intermediates. Gujarat in particular, with clusters in Vatva, Naroda, Ankleshwar, Vapi and Jhagadia, hosts hundreds of dye and intermediate manufacturers supplying textile, leather, paper, plastics and ink industries at home and abroad. Maharashtra and other states also have strong production bases.

Dye and intermediate manufacturing uses some of the most aggressive chemistry in industry: strong mineral acids, oleum, chlorosulphonic acid, nitric acid, alkalis, solvents and salt-laden effluents. Storage tanks, process vessels, scrubbers, effluent pits, drains, floors and plant structures all face constant chemical attack. CHEMIPROTECT supplies glass flake coating and lining systems designed to protect dye plant assets from this severe service.

Why Dye Plants Are So Corrosive

  • Strong acids. Sulphonation, nitration and diazotisation processes use sulphuric acid, oleum, nitric acid and hydrochloric acid.
  • Mixed and changing chemistry. Batch production means equipment may see different chemicals as products change.
  • Acid fumes. Reactors and storage tanks release acidic vapours that condense on nearby steel and concrete.
  • High-salt effluents. Coloured, acidic or alkaline wastewater with high dissolved salts attacks pits, drains and treatment tanks.
  • Spills and washdowns. Frequent cleaning and occasional spills wet floors, plinths and trenches.
  • Temperature. Many reactions and effluent streams are warm, accelerating attack.

These conditions quickly destroy ordinary paints and unprotected concrete. Plants need barrier systems that resist a wide range of chemicals and can be maintained easily.

How Glass Flake Linings Help

A glass flake lining combines a chemical-resistant resin with overlapping glass flakes. The flakes align parallel to the surface, creating a layered barrier. Chemicals and moisture must travel a long, winding path to reach the substrate, which greatly reduces permeation. This barrier effect is why glass flake linings perform well in tanks, ducts and structures exposed to aggressive chemicals.

Glass flake systems also offer good abrasion resistance, strong adhesion and the ability to be repaired locally. They are applied on site to steel and concrete, making them practical for existing plants. Learn more in our article on glass flake coating for corrosion protection.

CHEMIPROTECT Glass Flake Range

The MIPROGLASS family includes MIPROGLASS 101 E, MIPROGLASS 101 SV, MIPROGLASS 201 E Hybrid, MIPROGLASS 201 SV, MIPRO-EP and related grades. Because dye plants handle so many chemicals, product selection should be based on the specific acids, concentrations and temperatures in each area. Our team uses chemical resistance data to recommend the right grade; see our guide on how to read a chemical resistance chart. The full range is listed on our glass flake products page.

Mapping Chemical Exposure Before Lining

Dye plants rarely have a single uniform exposure. A tank farm, a sulphonation bay and an effluent pit each face different chemicals. Before selecting systems, CHEMIPROTECT recommends mapping exposure across the plant:

  1. List chemicals handled in each area, including concentrations and temperatures.
  2. Identify exposure type: immersion, splash, spill, fume or occasional washdown.
  3. Note mechanical conditions such as traffic, impact or abrasion.
  4. Record substrate condition, whether steel or concrete, new or damaged.
  5. Select systems zone by zone, from glass flake linings to brick and tile linings.

This approach avoids over-specifying in mild areas and under-protecting severe ones. Read more in our guide to chemical exposure mapping for industrial protection.

Glass Flake with Brick, Tile and Flooring Systems

In floors, drains and areas with heavy traffic or impact, glass flake membranes work well together with mechanical protection. CHEMIPROTECT supplies acid resistant tiles, acid resistant bricks and acid-resistant mortars for these zones, as well as epoxy flooring, coating and tank lining systems for areas with milder exposure. Choosing the right combination for each zone gives the best balance of performance and cost.

Application and Quality Assurance

  1. Plant coordination to isolate, drain, neutralise and clean equipment safely.
  2. Removal of contaminated or failed coatings and chemically damaged concrete.
  3. Surface preparation by abrasive blasting of steel or mechanical preparation of concrete.
  4. Repair of pitted steel and damaged concrete.
  5. Priming and glass flake application to specified thickness in layers.
  6. Inspection with thickness checks and holiday testing.
  7. Curing before chemicals are reintroduced.

Thorough cleaning and neutralisation are especially important in dye plants, because chemical residues trapped in concrete can attack new linings from beneath.

Supporting Environmental Compliance

Dye clusters face close regulatory scrutiny over effluents and spills. Leaking tanks, cracked pits and damaged drains can cause soil and groundwater contamination and regulatory action. Durable linings in tank farms, effluent systems and drains help contain chemicals and support compliance. See also our guides on chemical spill containment systems and chemical resistant drainage systems.

Benefits for Dye and Intermediate Manufacturers

  • Longer life for tanks, pits, ducts and structures.
  • Reduced leakage risk and better environmental compliance.
  • Lower maintenance cost through durable, repairable systems.
  • Zone-specific protection matched to actual chemical exposure.
  • One supplier for glass flake, epoxy, brick, tile and mortar systems.

Tank Farm Protection

Acid and chemical tank farms are among the highest-risk areas in a dye plant. Tanks hold large volumes of sulphuric acid, oleum, hydrochloric acid, caustic and other chemicals, and the surrounding bunds must contain any spill. Internal tank linings protect the shell from the stored chemical, while external coatings protect against fumes and drips. Bund floors and walls need chemical-resistant protection so that a leak is contained rather than soaking into concrete and soil. Glass flake systems can protect tank shells and bund surfaces, with acid-resistant tiles used where traffic or heavy spills are expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one glass flake product handle all dye plant chemicals?

No single product suits every chemical. We select grades area by area based on the acids, solvents and temperatures involved.

Are glass flake linings suitable for effluent pits?

Yes. Glass flake linings on properly prepared concrete protect effluent pits and sumps from acidic or alkaline wastewater.

Can lining be done without a full plant shutdown?

Work is usually done area by area during planned maintenance, with each section isolated and cleaned before lining.

How do I know which areas need the strongest protection?

Chemical exposure mapping identifies severe and mild zones so protection is matched to real conditions.

Do you serve dye clusters in Gujarat?

Yes. CHEMIPROTECT supports manufacturers across Gujarat and India. See our locations.
